Ampersand

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 18 May 2021

The symbol "&", known formally as an ampersand, is a widely used typographical symbol simply meaning "and". An example from radiology being "head & neck imaging".

On Radiopaedia, we have decided to favor the word "and" instead of the symbol, "&". We have decided to permit only a few rare exceptions to this preference:

  • commercial names, e.g. Johnson & Johnson, AT&T, etc.
  • H&E staining
  • the use of the "&" symbol in references, which need to be reproduced verbatim
