Blumensaat line

Blumensaat line corresponds to the roof of intercondylar notch of the femur as seen on lateral radiograph of knee joint. It has been used for:

  • indicating relative position of the patella (normally this line intersects the lower pole of the patella)
  • suggesting ACL injury (normal ACL Blumensaat angle is ≤15°)

It may not always be straight and three types have been described 3:

  • straight: ~ 35%
  • small hill: ~ 20% 
  • large hill: ~ 45%
