Bright band sign

Last revised by Mohamed Saber on 23 Jul 2021

The bright band sign is a sonographic sign found in the context of splenic infarction.

It consists of highly hyperechoic linear-shaped bands within splenic infarct lesions of different ages 1.

Histological examinations of spleens with the sign suggest it might be caused by preserved fibrous trabeculae surrounded by necrotic splenic parenchyma 1.

When present, the bright band sign enhances the sensitivity and specificity of splenic infarction 1, and thus should trigger additional investigations for possible etiologies, such as thromboembolic disorders, hypercoagulable states, pancreatic diseases, or hematologic malignancies 2.
