Cavo-atrial junction

The cavo-atrial junction refers to the junction of the right lateral border of the superior vena cava (SVC) and the superior border of the right atrium 1. It is an important landmark to recognize because it marks an optium site for central venous catheter tip placement.

Radiographic appearance

Chest radiograph
  • inflection of the lateral right atrial border with that of the SVC
  • more reliably estimated as two vertebral body levels below the level of the carina 2
