Cerebral amyloid deposition diseases

Last revised by Rohit Sharma on 25 May 2022

Cerebral amyloid deposition diseases are a group of related conditions characterized by the accumulation of cerebral amyloid-β (Aβ) in various parts of the central nervous system. They lead to inflammation, neurotoxicity, and vascular friability, and are typically encountered in the elderly.

Four main conditions are recognized, and these are discussed separately 1

  1. Alzheimer disease (most common)
  2. cerebral amyloid angiopathy (common)
  3. inflammatory cerebral amyloid angiopathy (rare)
  4. cerebral amyloidoma (very rare)

Additionally, novel amyloid-lowering therapies can lead to imaging abnormalities during treatment, known as amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) and sharing many similarities with inflammatory cerebral amyloid angiopathy 2
