Devitalised soft tissue occurs in diabetic feet or peripheral vascular disease, particularly deep to and around ulcers.
Terminology
Devitalised soft tissue is preferred to necrotic or ischemic soft tissue as the current understanding (c. 2022) is whether MRI appearances truly reflect necrosis or ischemia 1.
Radiographic features
MRI
Devitalised tissue presents as geographic regions of non-enhancing homogeneous low T1 signal with no rim enhancement, often with a well-defined border 1-3.
