Dexels, a portmanteau of detector elements, analogous to pixels, refers to the individual radiation-sensitive elements of the detector component of a scanner, e.g. computed tomography. It is important to appreciate that there is not necessarily a one-to-one correspondence between dexels and the resultant pixels in an image. The outputs from multiple dexels may combine to form a single pixel.
NB: the term dexel is used in computer based geometrical modeling to imply a 'depth pixel' which is a value on a meshed surface of a 3D representation. Such 'dexels' have practical implications for volume rendering, extended reality and 3D printing algorithms. Occasionally scientific literature related to radiology may use this meaning of the term.
