Friedrich disease

Friedrich disease is an eponymous name for osteonecrosis of the sternal end of the clavicle. It is a rare condition and documentation in the medical literature is scarce with most case reports dating from before 1990.

Epidemiology

It is more often encountered in children and adolescents 1.

Radiographic features

Diffuse sclerosis of the sternal end of the clavicle is the main finding 1,2. A central notch-like defect in the center of sternoclavicular articulation has also been described 1.

Treatment

It appears to be mostly a self-limited condition that can resolve spontaneously and responds to conservative treatment 1-3.​

Differential diagnosis

The general differentials consideration are those of a sclerotic clavicle.
