Gadoterate meglumine

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 9 Dec 2022

Gadoterate meglumine (also known as gadoteric acid and by the tradename Dotarem) is an intravenous extracellular gadolinium-based MRI contrast agent.

  • cyclic, ionic molecule

  • 100% renally-excreted

  • T1 relaxivity at 1.5 T: 3.4-3.8 L/mmol.S (slightly lower than other extracellular contrast agents)

  • concentration: 0.5 mmol/mL

  • recommended dosage: 0.1 mmol/kg

It is considered a high-stability agent, and is considered a good choice for patients with lower eGFRs (see: nephrogenic systemic fibrosis)

It is also licensed in Europe and Australia for intra-articular use, when it is sold in prefilled syringes as Artirem, which is chemically identical to Dotarem.  It is not licensed for this use in North America.
