Hematomyelia

Last revised by Henry Knipe on 18 Feb 2018

Hematomyelia refers to the presence of intramedullary hemorrhage or hematoma within the spinal cord. This is distinct from extramedullary hemorrhage such as that seen in epidural hematoma.

Pathology

Although hematomyelia can occur in the setting of trauma, the term is generally used to signify non-traumatic spinal cord hemorrhage. In the absence of trauma or abnormal coagulation, an underlying vascular lesion should always be considered in hematomyelia 1.
