Heschl's gyrus

Last revised by Ryan Thibodeau on 6 Sep 2023

Heschl's gyrus, also known as transverse temporal gyrus, is the gyrus on the superior surface of the temporal lobe that contains the primary auditory cortex (Brodmann areas 41 and 42). It is entirely hidden within the Sylvian fissure, opposite the postcentral gyrus above. It runs mediolaterally (rather than anteroposteriorly as other temporal lobe gyri), anterior to the planum temporale and medial to the superior temporal gyrus. It may be single or double.
