Humerus radiographic series

Last revised by Bahman Rasuli on 2 Aug 2021

The humerus series is comprised of an AP and lateral radiograph, utilized primarily in trauma, but also in the evaluation of bone tumors.

  • trauma: fracture neck of humerus/shaft of humerus fractures
  • bone tumor detection

The two standard projections allow two views of humerus at 90˚:

Further views may be required if there are suspected:

  • midshaft fracture include both shoulder and elbow joints
  • neck of humerus fracture, proximal humerus only is required
  • distal humerus fractures (e.g. supracondylar fractures) require elbow views
  • glenohumeral joint dislocations usually require a complete shoulder series
