Humerus radiographic series

Dr Henry Knipe and Kellie Grant et al.

The humerus series is comprised of an AP and lateral radiograph, utilized primarily in trauma, but also in the evaluation of bone tumors.

  • trauma: fracture neck of humerus / shaft of humerus fractures
  • bone tumor detection

The two standard projections allows two views of humerus at 90˚:

Further views may be required if there are suspected:

  • midshaft fracture include both shoulder and elbow joints
  • neck of humerus fracture, proximal humerus only is required
  • distal humerus fractures (e.g. supracondylar fractures) require elbow views
  • glenohumeral joint dislocations usually require a complete shoulder series
