Inferior cerebellar peduncle

Last revised by Craig Hacking on 3 Sep 2020

The inferior cerebellar peduncles are paired structures containing important white matter fiber tracts which connect the cerebellum to the medulla.

Gross anatomy

The inferior cerebellar peduncles are composed of a large restiform body and a small juxtarestiform body.

They contain the following afferent fiber tracts:

  • vestibulocerebellar tract
  • posterior spinocerebellar tract
  • cuneocerebellar tract
  • olivocerebellar tract
  • fibers from the reticular formation and various pontine nuclei, including the dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei which are separated by the peduncle

The only efferent fiber tracts passing through the inferior cerebellar peduncles are the cerebellovestibular tracts.

Arterial supply

The inferior cerebellar peduncles predominantly receive their arterial blood supply from branches of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery 1-3.
