Labyrinth of the inner ear

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 11 Mar 2019

The labyrinth of the inner ear is the combined sensory organ of hearing and balance and its surrounding bony cavity located in the petrous temporal bone, consisting of two components:

  1. the osseous labyrinth, the bony cavity, which houses
  2. the membranous labyrinth, a tubular sac filled with endolymph fluid

Perilymph flows within the intervening space between the osseous and membranous labyrinths.
