Lamellated

Last revised by Tee Yu Jin on 30 Jan 2020

The term lamellated (or laminated which means the same thing) is a radiopathological term used to describe the layered appearance of many calculi, including those of the renal tract, the salivary glands, and the biliary tree. The internal structure of these calculi has been likened to that of an onion with multiple concentric layers.

History and etymology

Lamellated and laminated derive from the same Latin root. Lamella is the Latin diminutive of lamina. Lamina is Latin for thin plate.
