Laryngeal ventricle

Last revised by Craig Hacking on 21 Feb 2024

The laryngeal ventricle is a slitlike, mucosa-lined, space located between the true and false vocal cords. It is often seen on lateral radiographs of the neck as an air-filled space between the true and false vocal cords. It should not be confused with the laryngeal vestibule.

It is also known as the sinus of Morgagni, not to be confused with the identically named sinus of Morgagni in the pharyngobasilar fascia of the nasopharynx.

The Italian anatomist Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771) originally described the laryngeal ventricle in his 1719 text "Adversaria anatomica omnia" 3.
