Metallic ureteral stents

Patients with malignant ureteric obstruction and poor life expectancy usually require placement of ureteral stents to relieve the urinary obstruction and as a palliative measure to reduce pain and avoid major operation.

Metallic ureteric stents have recently been developed to try and offer better relief of obstruction than polymeric (polyurethane) stents due to:

  • better maintaining ureteral patency in malignancy when conventional polyurethane stents are usually occluded.
  • increased intervals between changes.
  • less liable to infection, sepsis and bleeding as in nephrostomy tubes.
  • less irritation of the lower urinary tract then JJ catheter.

Example of the metallic stent: Memokath stent which has expanded top to anchor it within the ureter.
