Migrating pericardial cyst

Last revised by Bouhouche Abdeldjalil on 10 Jan 2024

Migrating pericardial cysts or wandering pericardial cysts are an unusual form of pericardial cysts. They are usually pedunculated and change in position on serial imaging but have all other imaging characteristics supportive of a pericardial or pleuro-pericardial cyst.

Pathology

Migrating pericardial cyst refers to pedunculated pericardial cyst attached to the pericardial sac by a thin stalk which is not always readily visible on imaging. The stalk permits mobility of the cyst allowing it to be situated away from the pericardium altering its position on serial imaging for months to years 2.

Location

Remarkably, pericardial cyst migration has only been reported with right-sided cysts probably due to the anatomical proximity of the right major fissure to the pericardium
