Moulage

Last revised by Andrew Murphy on 14 Jan 2020

Moulage is a term that when used most broadly in medical simulation implies any technique to produce realistic anatomic modeling of body parts or organs in three dimensions to show pathologies of patients. Some sources use the term in a way that includes 3D printing and augmented reality based on medical imaging or even make-up applied to simulate wounds 3, but others limit the term to implying only techniques that are based in casting or molding, although may include various embellishments.

History and etymology

Moulage is the French word for molding. The historical roots of moulage go back centuries. Anatomical models were made using molding techniques before more precise methodologies were available.
