Nerve compression syndromes of the shoulder

Last revised by Joshua Yap on 20 May 2023

Nerve compression syndromes of the shoulder is a term used to include diseases of the shoulder that cause weakness, discomfort or numbness of the upper extremity. These include quadrilateral space syndrome, suprascapular neuropathy, long thoracic nerve palsy and multiple others 1. They are usually a result of traction or kink of the nerve secondary to fracture and compression over nerve ganglia 1,2.

Treatment and prognosis

Conservative management/no surgery is an option in many shoulder nerve injury cases, recovery is more likely when shorter duration of compression over the nerve and in mild injury cases. Surgical decompression is recommended if symptoms keep going.
