Phlegmon

Dr Daniel J Bell et al.

Phlegmon (plural: phlegmons) refers to unbounded, non-specific inflammation of soft tissue, usually in the context of infectious disease. It is distinct from an abscess which is walled-off by peripheral granulation tissue.

Terminology

Both historically and contemporaneously, phlegmon is used in an inconsistent fashion. Some use it to refer to a frank abscess, whilst others have used it exclusively for skin and subcutaneous infections.
