Posterior mediastinum

The Posterior Mediastinum is posterior to the pericardium and the diaphragm.  It is continuous the retropharyngeal space via the posterior part of the superior mediastinum.

The contents include:

  • Descending aorta
  • Azygos vein
  • Hemiazygos veins
  • Esophagus
  • Thoracic lymph nodes
    • preaortic nodes
    • para-aortic nodes
    • parasternal nodes
    • tracheobronchial lymph nodes
  • Thoracic duct

The boundaries are:

  • anteriorly: bifurcation of trachea, pulmonary vessels, pericardium and posterior fibers of the diaphragm
  • posteriorly: thoracic vertebrae 4 to 12
  • laterally:  mediastinal pleura
