Primary pulmonary meningioma

Last revised by David Luong on 27 Jul 2021

A primary pulmonary meningioma is a very rare form of an ectopic meningioma.

They are generally asymptomatic and incidentally discovered although rarely patients with symptoms have also been reported.

Histologically, they comprise of whorls of spindle cells interspersed with abundant psammoma bodies, and typically positive for vimentin, and EMA (epithelial membrane antigen).

Typically seen as a solitary pulmonary nodule. May show homogeneous 6 or heterogeneous 3 enhancement.

The first case was thought to have been described by Erlandson in 1981 7 while the first report in the English literature was thought to be by Kemnitz and Heinrich in 1982.

These lesions are largely benign, but malignant lesions have been rarely reported 1. Many publications suggest resection in appropriate cases 7.
