Last revised by Rohit Sharma on 27 Jul 2021

Psittacosis, also known as ornithosis, refers to a disease caused by the organism Chlamydia psittaci, which is transmitted to humans predominantly from birds.

Epidemiology

Occupations such as bird owners, veterinarians, breeders and sellers of birds, and commercial poultry processors are considered to be at increased risk.

Clinical presentation

While pneumonia is the most common manifestation, all organ systems can be involved.

Serology remains the mainstay of diagnosis, however, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques can also offer a rapid and specific diagnosis.
