The RANZCR applied imaging technology (AIT) examination is one of two examinations comprising the RANZCR Phase 1 examinations, with the other examination being the anatomy examination.
These examinations can be sat together or independent of each other, however trainees have a maximum of four consecutive opportunities to complete both examinations. The examinations are typically attempted early in the first year of radiology training.
Format
The examination is 3 hours in duration (with 5 minutes reading time) and consists of:
9 constructed response questions: worth 10 marks per question
60 multiple choice questions: best of five possible answers, worth 1 mark per question
Since September 2013 the examination has been delivered electronically. Currently it is delivered on the Practique system via online proctoring. Images and diagrams may be provided (e.g. to identify an MRI artefact), and all the images are downloaded locally prior to commencement of the examination to prevent slow loading times during the examination.

The examination aims to assess knowledge on imaging technology, quality and safety. There are three topic areas:

basic concepts of electromagnetic radiation
interactions between x-rays and matter of relevance to medical imaging
filters, collimators and grids
digital imaging concepts

radiation protection and patient safety
radiation biology and dosimetry
patient safety
safety in nuclear medicine
quality assurance for diagnostic imaging equipment
