Review area

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 5 May 2021

Review areas (a.k.a. reporting checklists) are specific anatomical regions of imaging examinations whereby it has been found that radiologists are more likely to overlook significant findings. The most well known review areas are those of the standard frontal chest radiograph. The routine use of review areas is encouraged to decrease the chance that findings are missed by the reporter.

In a study from 2017 of reporting errors, it was found that only five regions of anatomy across the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, CNS and musculoskeletal systems were responsible for more than half of all perceptual errors 1.
