Speckled anterior horn of lateral meniscus

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 5 Mar 2021

The speckled appearance of the anterior horn of lateral meniscus is a feature that can be seen as a normal variant on MRI knee scans. It is usually seen near the lateral meniscus central attachment site. It is often explained by fibers of the anterior cruciate ligament and the covering synovium inserting into the meniscus root giving it a striated appearance.

Radiographic appearance

MRI

It can be seen on one or two of the most medial sagittal images with the meniscus having a speckled nature.

Differential diagnosis

It may be mistaken for a torn lateral meniscus.
