Spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be traumatic or non-traumatic (e.g. neoplastic compression or degenerative stenosis) but the syndromes associated with spinal cord injury can be seen in all etiologies.

Injuries to the spinal cord can be incomplete or complete and are graded on the ASIA impairment scale. Different types of injuries result in different clinical outcomes. According to the clinical features, some incomplete spinal cord injuries can be classified into six subsets:

Spinal cord injuries may result in potential disability and chronic functional impairment, which is why early recognition of injury type as well as their functional outcome are of extreme importance in management and treatment.
