Split fat sign

Last revised by Joachim Feger on 14 Aug 2023

The split fat sign is a feature that can be seen typically on MRI images with peripheral nerve sheath tumors. It is seen as a fine rind of fat around the lesion. It is best appreciated on T1 weighted images 1. On coronal or sagittal images (i.e. images along the direction of the nerve) a tapered rim of fat signal may be seen adjacent to the proximal and distal ends of the lesion 1.
