Spoke wheel pattern in kidney

Last revised by Mohamed Saber on 25 Feb 2021

A spoke wheel pattern in renal imaging refers to a vascular appearance seen with certain renal tumors, typically seen in oncocytomas but can also be seen in renal cell carcinomas

This appearance refers to a peripheral rim of vessels from which centripetal vessels converge centrally giving the appearance of spokes of a wheel.

This could be explained by the presence of a pseudocapsule and a central scar. It may be appreciated on angiography, CT, MRI and has been even reported on ultrasound.
