Superficial epigastric veins
Vena epigastrica superficialis

The superficial epigastric vein (TA: vena epigastrica superficialis) is an important tributary of the great saphenous vein that drains the anterior abdominal wall inferior to the level of the umbilicus.

The superficial epigastric vein drains into the great saphenous vein at the saphenous opening of the fascia lata of the proximal upper thigh.

NB: do not confuse with the superior epigastric vein

Radiographic features

Doppler ultrasound demonstration of reversed flow in the superficial epigastric vein has been used as a surrogate marker of iliocaval venous occlusion ⁴.
