Symphyseal fundal height

Last revised by Yuranga Weerakkody on 23 May 2022

Symphyseal fundal height (SFH) is commonly used measurement practiced primarily used to detect fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

For fetuses after 24 weeks' gestation, it is measured using a tape as the distance

from

- the pubic symphysis (by identifying the upper border of the symphysis pubis)

to

- the uterine fundus

In a normally growing fetus, the SFH measurement in centimeters it taken as corresponding to the gestation in weeks (i.e., a normal SFH measurement for a 27 weeks' gestation singleton pregnancy, should be 27 cm +/‐ 2 cm).
