Tc-99m DTPA

Tc-99m DTPA (diethylene-triamine-pentaacetate) is one of the technetium radiopharmaceuticals used in renal imaging and primarily used to measure the glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

    • uptake by glomerular filtration (100%)

    • first pass filtration: 10-20%

  • excretion: renal; cleared only via glomeruli with no tubular excretion. Thus making it available for direct measurement of GFR.

    • poor quality images with renal insufficiency

Uses, doses and timings

  • dynamic renal scintigraphy

  • adult dose: 200 MBq (about 3 MBq per kg of body weight)

  • 60 sec flow study; then every 5 minutes for 25 minutes
