Ventral tegmental area

Last revised by Candace Makeda Moore on 2 Oct 2019

The ventral tegmental area is a midline area, located medially to the substantia nigra, composed of multiple nuclei 1 in the midbrain with many dopaminergic neurons.

Historically the area was easier to delineate through gross pathology or histology than radiology. However probabilistic atlases have allowed both more precise demarcation of the area in imaging 2,3 and demonstration of variations across populations 4.
