World Health Organizatiοn (WHO)

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 4 Oct 2021

The World Health Organizatiοn (WHO) is an agency of the United Nations (UN) that was established in 1948 and acts as the leader in coordinating global health, especially in relation to the developing world. From a radiology perspective, a key role of the WHO is in spearheading international radiation protection efforts (in liaison with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)).

Radiologists may contribute to these international efforts via their national professional membership associations (e.g. American College of Radiology (ACR), Royal College of Radiologists (RCR)). Many of these national societies are paid members of the International Society of Radiologists (ISR) which provides a unifying global voice for radiologists and promotes matters of imaging importance to the WHO.
