What patterns of MRI enhancement are identified?
Patchy central enhancement, rim enhancement, homogeneous enhancement or a combination of these patterns (1). The degree of enhancement usually depends on the amount and degree of bony trabeculae, cellularity, collagen, and cystic and hemorrhagic changes.
What locations are typical for monostotic fibrous dysplasia?
Ribs, femur, mandible, skull, and humerus are most common (in that order).
In polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, which areas are more frequently also seen?
Pelvis and shoulder girdle as well as facial bones and spine.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows typical features with a low-to-intermediate signal intensity equal to that of muscle on T1-weighted images in the tibial shaft, with endosteal thinning of the cortex and no periosteal or surrounding soft-tissue changes. T2-weighted images also show low signal intensity owing to the high content of collagen and bone. A mild and homogeneous enhancement pattern of the lesion is seen after gadolinium.
