Chest x-ray demonstrates a veiling opacity of the left hemithorax with marked volume loss and obliteration of the left cardiac silhouette. The descending aorta and hemidiaphragm are still clearly visible.

Left upper lobe collapse is confirmed on lateral projection, with hyperinflation of the left lower lobe and increased opacity anteriorly, delimited by the left oblique fissure.
