Limping and pain in right hip

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

Marginal osteophytosis, and subchondral cystic changes at the right hip joint.

Marginal osteophytosis, extensive marrow edema and subchondral cystic changes. No evidence of AVN.

The total hip replacement is well-positioned.

Case Discussion

Degenerative changes in young patients are concerning for an underlying etiology. It may be post-traumatic, inflammatory or related to avascular necrosis. MRI can differentiate avascular necrosis from other causes. 

Post-operatively the diagnosis was confirmed, however, due to the extensive nature of degenerative changes a total hip replacement was undertaken.
