Cystic bronchiectasis

Discussion:

Bronchiectasis is defined as irreversible dilatation of part of the bronchial tree. This case shows a lower lobe predominance of bronchiectasis, mainly on the left.

Lower lung predominant bronchiectasis, which is the most frequent pattern, is most commonly idiopathic. However, some cases have known causes, such as:

  • recurrent childhood infections
  • aspiration
  • fibrotic lung disease
  • rare causes like bronchiolitis obliterans from posttransplantation rejection is a rare cause of bronchiectasis-associated with patchy mosaic perfusion, air trapping, and bronchiolar obstruction. And hypogammaglobulinemia can also be a cause of lower lobe bronchiectasis, most often caused by recurrent infections

In this case, bronchiectasis are of uncertain etiology.
