Primary peritoneal mesothelioma

Case contributed by Maxime St-Amant
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Acute abdominal pain; chronic weight loss. Possible asbestos exposure.

Patient Data

Age: 75 years
Gender: Male

Extensive ascites (including interloop fluid) with enhancing, greater omental infiltration. No pleural plaques were seen on the chest CT-scan. The diagnosis is either abdominal mesothelioma or peritoneal carcinomatosis of unknown origin.

Multiple liver lesions all show nodular peripheral enhancement. Hemangiomas are favored and metastases are unlikely but, as these are not entirely excluded, liver MRI was suggested.

Case Discussion

The final histopathological diagnosis was abdominal mesothelioma.
