Multiple myeloma with generalized osteopenia

Presentation

A known case of multiple myeloma.

Patient Data

Age: 47 years
Gender: Male

There is generalized osteopaenia with several vertebral compression fractures  and  vertebra plana.

Case Discussion

The findings are compatible with multiple myeloma.

Disseminated multiple myeloma has two common radiological appearances :

  • numerous, well circumscribed lytic bone lesions : more common
    • punched out lucencies e.g. pepperpot skull or raindrop skull
    • endosteal scalloping
  • generalized osteopaenia : less common 
    • often associated with vertebral compression fractures / vertebra plana.
