Pleural tuberculosis - mass

Presentation

This patient presented to the respiratory clinic with right sided pleuritic chest pains. She was otherwise well. She recalls lengthy 'chest infections' as a child in Mongolia.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

In the right lower zone, there is a sharply marginated peripheral mass forming obtuse angles with the chest wall. Heart and mediastinal contours appear within normal limits.

  • There is a right posterolateral pleural mass of heterogeneous attenuation including small foci of calcification.
  • There is minor parenchymal change in the lungs adjacent to the pleural mass.
  • Normal ribs

Case Discussion

VATS resection of the pleural mass was performed. Culture was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
