What is the mainstay of imaging for gastrointestinal TB?
CT. Although ultrasound may be performed initially and even help in histological confirmation and traditionally barium studies have been undertaken CT is the modality of choice.
Does gastrointestinal TB have characteristic imaging features?
No. Thats why it is tricky. The correlation of findings, along with a strong clinical suspicion is needed. In particular Crohns and lymphoma can be hard to exclude, with a simple preponderance for the ileocaecal region. TB - the great mimicker.
The caecum and a considerable amount of terminal ileum is thick walled and enhancing. Multiple enlarged pericolic (most retrocaecal) lymph nodes.
