Sinus tarsi syndrome

Presentation

Ankle pain, sense of giving away and limitation of movement following several episodes of ankle sprain

Patient Data

Age: 40 years old
Gender: Female
mri

Loss of fat signal of the sinus tarsi which is replaced by inhomogenous soft tissue that displays low signal in T1, faintly bright signal in T2 and strongly bright signal in STIR. Associated sprained calcaneofibular ligament and mild joint effusion are noted.

Case Discussion

The patient experienced multiple episodes of ankle sprain resulting in injury of interosseous and cervical ligaments inside the sinus tarsi and instability of the subtalar joint.
