Greenstick metatarsal fracture

Presentation

Dropped kettle on foot. Pain around the lateral malleolus.

Patient Data

Age: 9 years old
Gender: Female
x-ray

The frontal and oblique foot radiographs demonstrate a linear lucency projected across the mid-portion of the 3rd metatarsal with preservation of the lateral cortex. This is a greenstick fracture.

Case Discussion

Features here are of a greenstick fracture of the 3rd metatarsal with preservation of the lateral cortex. Note the rather dense and early ossification of the calcaneal apophysis which may be extremely variable in its pattern of ossification.
