Presentation
Infant was suffering from agonising spasmodic abdominal pain.
Patient Data
Right iliac fossa free of gas.
An intra-abdominal soft tissue mass with a target sign appearance is located predominantly within the umbilical region raising the possibility of intussusception.
Hydrostatic reduction of intussusception. It shows steady flow of contrast from the descending colon until reaching the upper part of the ascending colon. Evidence of coiled spring appearance, filling defect of intussusception seen during the procedure. No more progression.
Case Discussion
After US diagnosis of infantile intussusception with digital rectal examination showed red currant jelly mucus, a hydrostatic reduction using dilated Gastrografin was tried. Progressive monitored reduction was achieved until reaching the distal ascending colon, where there was no more progressive reduction, so decision for surgical intervention.
