Retrocaval ureter

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Ultrasound showed a right proximal hydroureter and mild dilatation of the pelvicalyceal system.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
Fluoroscopy

Spot film taken during fluoroscopy study shows a 'Reverse J' appearance of right ureter

This is seen to occur at the level of L4 vertebra and extending upwards

This configuration of ureter has caused proximal dilatation of ureter and pelvicalceal system

It is an anomaly of the ureter which occurs due to persistence of the subcardinal vein.
