Lateral medullary syndrome

Presentation

Known hypertensive patient presented with cerebellar ataxia, loss of sensation to pain and warm/cold water on right side of face and sweating only on left side of face

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male
mri

There is an area of FLAIR hyperintensity in the left medulla oblongata, with associated diffusion restriction.  Bilateral areas of  encephalomalacia are consistent with old infarcts.

Case Discussion

Findings very suggestive of lateral medullary syndrome due to left posterior inferior cerebellar artery infarct.
