MACROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: "Appendix": An appendix 55mm in length x up to 14mm in diameter. Cream serosal exudate covers the entire specimen. Sectioning reveals intraluminal haemorrhage. No tumour is seen.

MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION: Sections of the appendix show mucosal ulceration, associated with transmural acute inflammatory cell infiltrate. The serosa is covered by heavy inflammatory exudate. There is no evidence of malignancy.

DIAGNOSIS: Appendix: Acute appendicitis.
